We will meet at the Roaches lay-by and head up to the crag (approx 500 m) there you will be shown how to set up safety rope systems - you will then have the opportunity to climb rock faces in different areas of the crag.

During the day you will learn the basics of how to climb safely and will have a go at climbs of different grades. Instruction will be given by Upper Limits professional and friendly staff.

Traditional May Day with May Queen, King and attendants. The parade leaves at 11.15am with the crowning ceremony at 11.30am.

Overlooked by Neolithic Ancestors - Archaeology Walk at Pikehall

An Archaeological Guided Walk to Minninglow Chambered Tomb and Roystone Grange.

4.5 mile walk with archaeologist John Barnatt, visiting the most impressive Neolithic tomb in the Peak, a Romano-British farm and Medieval grange. Also taking in an impressive embankment of the 1830s Cromford and High Peak railway, with adjacent limestone quarries and brick kilns.

On footpaths with some moderate gradients. Meet Minninglow Car Park on the High Peak Trail. From the A5012 Via Gellia, take the minor road south towards Parwich at Pikehall. After nearly one mile turn left and left again into the car park (GR: SK194 581)

Tissington Well Dressing

Well dressing is in ancient tradition unique to Derbyshire. Tissington has been celebrating the life giving water from the wells for centuries, possibly since 1349, after the village survived a terrible outbreak of the Black Death. Six wells are dressed in Tissington.

A blessing service will take place on Thursday 17 May at 11.00am in St Mary's Church, followed by blessing each well from around 12 noon.

Derbyshire Food and Drink Festival at Hardwick Hall

Over 150 stalls showcase the very best local food and drink from Derbyshire and the Peak District, as well as unique and exotic foods from further afield. Goods range from meats, pickles, wines cakes, chocolates, organic produce, cookery ware and much more.

Find out more about this ancient custom by watching the well dressers working to dress the well. Clay and natural materials are used to produce a picture or design.

The five locations in the village (DE45 1QF), all signposted and open at various times, are:

Ashford in the Water Well Dressing


This ancient custom is unique to Derbyshire. In Ashford-in-the-Water, 6 wells are dressed on different themes.

A blessing service will take place on Sunday 3 June, 3pm at Trinity Church followed by procession around the wells

Refreshments will be served all week at the Old School Community Rooms where an art exhibition by the Village Arts Group will be on show. The Institute will also be serving refreshments a few days in the week.

This year will see the 81st Ashover Show, however the Ashover Agricultural and Horticultural Society can trace its origins back to 1924.  We are proud to offer you a traditional country show which has something to entertain every member of your family.

The Hope Show 2012

Hope Show is the traditional end of summer agricultural show based in the Hope Valley between Castleton and Hope. Wide range of activities for all the family including a main ring programme of attractions, 2 day sheep dog trials, light & heavy horse show, cattle, sheep and Hope Valley Young Farmers show, Alpaca & sheep fleece show, High Peak Poultry Club exhibition.

2012 Chatsworth Country Fair

Held in the park of Chatsworth House, home to the Dukes of Devonshire, the 2012 event will be the 31st Country Fair. It has become one of the largest events of its type in England, and is an essential part of the Derbyshire and Midlands calendar. Given good weather, crowds of the order of 90,000 people can be expected over the three days. The focus of the Show is the Grand Ring on the "big flat", with over 300 trade stands and crafts. Around the park are over 40 showground attractions, many with a country theme.
